I’m reading, and utterly loving, Slaughterhouse 5 at the moment. But here’s the thing – it isn’t just the words and story I love. It’s the typeface, the cover, the feel of the book, its weight, its texture, its size. I felt the same about Willful Creatures, by Aimee Bender (seriously, I stroked that book!) among a few others (Leading The Dance, The Time Traveler’s Wife, If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things, Love That Dog) but, I don’t know, there’s just something about Willful Creatures and Slaughterhouse 5 that makes holding them – the thing, thinking about it, almost as enjoyable as reading it.
Is it just me?

yep – some books just feel and look amazing (though i still love the old, old hardcovers, almost falling apart, and smelling like history).

Hi Nik, I’ve arrived here via Jane Smith’s Pitch Party. I also enjoy the relaxing aspects of the reading process itself, as well as the story. I read a lot of Peter F Hamilton though, so my arms often get tired. His books are big.
It really does for me, the whole reading experience is affected by the look of the book, the feel, the size, the fonts. I am reading a wonderful story collection, Big World, by Mary Miller, which is in an extra small book but with an old-world 1950s kind of cover. I just love it!
