A Thing Of Great Beauty

Now, it’s no secret that I like my music. I do. It’s important and it’s brilliant and wonderful when it’s done well. And, thanks to places like Jango and Amazing Radio I’ve made a number of very cool discoveries over the past few years.

And I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that last week’s discovery could well be the best.

‘These Friends Of Mine’ is Rosie Thomas’ 4th album (I think). It was recorded in a house and released in 2006. Its sound is small, almost a whisper at times, but it’s so strong and honest too. And beautiful. I think that’s the best way to describe it. It is a thing of great beauty. The words, too, are the same.

It’s so good, in fact, that after buying the album from iTunes I went on to order the actual CD. I can’t remember the last time that happened. Mariee Sioux was one who received that treatment way back in 2006 and I bought a Jaymay CD last year.

I am more than a little bit in love with it. Here are a few reasons why.

As you were.

I imagine they've made it onto a few film soundtracks or episodes of the OC – if not, they should.Really beautiful. I think I like Paper Dolls best – I titled a poem the same a couple of years ago, but Rosie's lyrics are something else.I'm quite infatuated with Imogen Heap currently.Music is important – more than many people admit to themselves.

Great discovery, Nik. She's new to me but I really like her voice and her mellow way with these vocals. I'm a sucker for this kind of thing, so I'm going to check her out on iTunes. Thank you.

It's like finding the perfect stone on the beach. There are thousands of stones but this one's just about perfect. It's a gentle album, no screaming 'look at me'. The original songs are fabulous and the covers add something different to the originals, although I believe there should be a law that no one should be allowed to sing Songbird except Christine McVie.'Kite Song' is the stand out for me, partly because the words are relevant to my life at the moment. It's up there with Peter Gabriel's version of 'The Book Of Love' (Magnetic Fields) as a song that just hits you straight between the eyes. It's a fabulous find Nik.

Hey Rachel – not sure if it has made it onto any soundtracks but I agree – they'd be perfect. And you're SO right, music is essential!
