What Do You Write On?

A question for you folks: What do you write on? And I mean in a laptop sense. It’s getting to the stage where mine’ll need replacing soon and I was hoping you’d be kind enough to share your laptop experiences, good or bad.

I’ve been on a Sony for the last couple of years and it’s been ok, but not without its problems.
And I wouldn’t have a Mac – too much to re-buy programmes et al. even though they are very pretty.

  1. I had a HP Pavilion for years and loved it! But it finally went to Laptop heaven before Xmas and I got a good deal at John Lewis. I purchased a Macbook with free Office but You could download Open Office and it runs on Linux/Windows/Macbooks and it uses the same file formats. I am also still accepting the fact that the Macbook has no delete button just backspace!

  2. You should get a Mac! All the usual software you need comes with it anyway – that’s the beauty of them! No need for messing with anti-virus software and when it comes to printers/projectors etc you can pretty much just plug in and go. Also surprisingly long-lasting – I got mine for my 21st and over 5 years later it’s still going strong. And also they are really, really pretty…

  3. I have a Dell XPS M1330, it’s lovely and it’s red! It has a 12″ screen and is particular light so I can put it in my bag and take it out with me. The screen may be smaller than usual but the keyboard is full sized, I really like writing on it and it’s pretty powerful. I bought the extra extra long life battery, I get 5 hours. Highly recommended! And I run Linux instead of Windows, SO much better!

  4. Sorry Nik – but you really should get a Mac. I got a MacBook after my 2 year old Vaio ground to a terminal halt. I bought Office4Mac and have NO problems with file transfers between macs and PCs. No probs with picture files either.

  5. Laptop? My dear, I don’t have a laptop – hugely bad for one’s back, you know!!:))AxxxI use a desktop Mac with a Windows environment – it’s lovely!

  6. Yet another Mac fan Nik, sorry. I got my MacBook a couple of years ago, and despite one disastrous hard drive failure/wipe out I ain’t never going back! When I use a PC now, I feel irritated. Mac = happy.

  7. NNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Macs are evil! The invention of Satan! no, don’t do it, It will eat your brain!- Sony good – Sony nice. As you can tell, I dislike Macs. Lx

  8. I have a little netbook – the Asus EeePC 1000H – and it’a about my most favourite thing ever… It’s got a little 10 inch screen, widescreen, so you have to scroll down more than usual on most documents, but it’s soooo portable, and you can perch it on your knee while you’re curled up on the sofa. Nice! And I use Open Office rather than Word – just as good, imo, and free.

  9. Supercool! Thanks mates! Lots to check out (though I do think the Mac option will be too expensive and will require more re-learning than I’m capable of!).Nik

  10. I’m going to have to say Mac I’m afraid. I don’t actually own one, but my girlfriend has an old G3 laptop which is just lovely to use. Plus you get artistic cred just being seen working on one.Me, I do my writing at a desk. I’ve always like the idea of sitting with a laptop in a café somewhere, drinking coffee, working a novel however the reality is that I’d just sit there and surf the net or play computer games…

  11. Well it’s a laptop called Acer Aspire. With Vista. That’s about all I know:-)Good luck with finding the right one for you.

  12. An iBook G4… it is a bit fancier than it needs to be for what I do (bearing in mind I am a bit of a techno-dunce)… but it is lovely and although some of the letters have worn thin on the keys, I feel that that is only testament to the amount of ‘punishment’ I have given it over the past three years, and it still keeps on ticking. But in all honesty, a word processor that has a link to the internet, is good enough for my needs.Best.D
