On Making Things and Creativity

Really, really love what Brett Anderson had to say here about (song) writing. About making things if you don’t have them. On making something different. On doing something different. On inspiration and creativity and on growing into what you become.

Story writing is no different.

I’ve been listening to old Suede stuff quite a bit of late. Especially this and (wait for the intro to finish) this.

And I think I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and remembering. Time doesn’t half fly and people don’t half change (I’m talking about me here as well). But doing that remembering and listening to these songs I loved when I was fourteen or so has cheered me up no end.

Blabbering over. For now.

Since about 7 years ago I have a six degrees of separation thing with Brett Anderson – not that he knows about it, but I do. And it's strange, but growing up in the States, I didn't really know that much about Suede though I had heard of them. So it was interesting to hear him speak after all this time of feeling like I know him.

Ooh now, that's got me interested, Sue! Do tell! He's been a bit of a (anti) hero of mine since I was a teenager and I've been thrilled to have been reminded of him and the music he made. And he talks such sense in this interview. Love it!

Thanks for this, Nik. I love this programme – the Jarvis Cocker one was really good too. One of the best gigs I've been to had Suede and David Bowie on the bill. Brett Anderson is suprising on stage, really commanding and somehow bigger than I thought he would be.

Ooh Suede and Bowie on the same bill sounds awesome!I've seen Suede a couple of times and (Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros aside) they were the best band I've seen. Brett's a brilliant performer and, as you say, he's commanding and I'd add striking and oddly graceful.I'll be looking up the Cocker one just as soon as I'm up to date – thanks for the tip.N
