Could You Pass the Louisiana Test?

Well, could you? I most certainly couldn’t. Have a go, and have an interesting read, here.

Not likely. Too much of it is pure speculation as to what the question really is and involves little but guess work on the part of the test taker. Sadly, this kind of thing was common in the South I grew up in in the late fifties and early sixties. And it certainly worked as intended – suppressing the black vote and that of the poorest citizens in the states.

I’m not one to pass judgement on other countries and I’m certainly not anti-American (let’s not forget all the oppression we Brits have doled out, we’ve got enough to be ashamed of) but this just seemed so absolute in its prejudice and so obvious in its intentions, and it saddens me still that people, like you, have seen this kind of thing first hand – in living memory. We are moving forward, I think, but I do think the same thing is happening, all over the world. It’s just better veiled.

And always great to see you here, Sam!
