Competition (And a super secret project revealed)

I have been asked to collaborate on a project which I think will be really cool.
It is an art book. It will contain photographs and very short stories. The photographs are Katherine Lewis’. The stories will be inspired by those photographs (a little bit like what super Sarah Salway’s been doing of late).
Now, I’ll not kid you. It’s not going to be a bestseller. It’s not going to be available in bookshops. It’s going to be produced locally, and any profit it makes will go to charity. But it will be very beautiful, I’m sure of that.
And I thought it’d be rather cool if you were involved. So if you’d like to be one of the 20 contributors all you need to do is write a 50 (ish) word poem or short story inspired by the above photograph. Post your story either in my comments box or email it to me by next Wednesday (29th April).  One winner will be picked a little while after that, and that winner will receive a free copy of the finished book.
How’s that sound?

  1. Thanks Megan. The charity’s being confirmed; there’ll be an announcement on here just as soon as I/we know which one we’re going with (which will be when we hear from them). Sorry to have to be vague – watch this space (and rest assured it’ll be a good and deserving one).Nik

  2. As you know, Nik, I just love these wee ‘games’ on Sarah Salway’s blog. So, I have thrown up three here in response to your hen picture.Hal has hens in a coop. And one that is special. Calls her ‘Mercy’. Feeds her corn from his hand, and best birdseed. Keeps that chicken in a box at the end of his bed. Every morning Hal cries ‘Mercy me, an egg!’ as if it could be a surprise.Corbin don’t like chickens. Calls the one he has, ‘fricken chicken’. Close to ‘fricase’ when he says it. Calls her this as reminder to himself not to get too fond. Feeds her from his hand and talks to her soft. But only so’s she’ll taste the sweeter on his plate.Chicken Licken – you knows the story. Bout the world endin. C’mon bird. I means you no harm. Is jes a story. I wants to stroke ma fingers ‘cross your neck, is all. Hear no threat in me. See no knife in ma hand. C’mon bird. Reckon you’s finger-licken good chicken.

  3. Erm…I’ve sent you 49 words. I am very nervous about your reaction to them but the picture brought back a very vivid episode in my life and I had to submit it.

  4. Oh I just read this now…do I have time to get a poem down…maybe I will manage tonight…and then I’ll email you. Hope all is well! aminah
