Update

First off, I just wanted to thank everyone who took the time to send me good wishes and get better messages. Do you know, they really work.

I am officially starting to feel better. Well, more like myself at least. Today I didn’t need to sleep, or even nap. I’ve even been brave enough to lay off the codeine, and I can actually put my foot on the floor without wanting to scream. I can even touch my foot now – I can even remove my sock without fearing I’ll go straight into shock from the pain. These are all tremendous things.

(Other tremendous things include: 1. It doesn’t seem the bacteria’s got into my bloodstream and spread, and 2. it’s not turned into the gangrene thingumy it could have. 3. It’s deep enough into my skin that it hasn’t scarred.) A less tremendous thing would be how these super strength antibiotics make me feel, but they’re working so I aint complaining.

So, err, that’s it. Just wanted you to know that I wasn’t dead. And that I still have two feet. And that I really appreciate all your kind comments.

  1. When I’ve had a bad day, I reflect that no day is that bad if you finish it with the same number of arms and legs you had when you started.

  2. I bl**dy hope so. They are seriously hard work! More than anything I’m just looking forward to feeling normal. And writing. There’s always the writing.Nik X

  3. Nik – SO glad to hear that you’re feeling better, and that all of the above didn’t happen. I think you’re supposed to eat lots of “live” yoghurt or something to counteract the antiobiotics, not sure. Keep healing and writing.

  4. Thanks folks. Oh yes, I’ve been shovelling down prebiotic yoghurt (thanks Dee) like it’s going out of fashion – and it has helped so much (even though I’ve been under strict orders not to eat ANYTHING for at least half an hour after taking the antibiotics). Really looking forward to being better again! Thanks again, folks. You’re the best.Nik X

  5. Hurrah! SO pleased to here you’re getting better, Nik, and with all your feet in tact. You know, where my friend Pita (aka MG Harris) broke her leg skiing and was laid up for 3 months with nothing else to do… she wrote her best-selling YA book, Invisible City. I’d take this as a sign, and get writing!(In a bizarre coincidence, my mother called this morning with the news that my brother is in hospital with suspected cellutitis. I knew what she was going to say before she got past the “flu-like symptoms” part.)

  6. The thing with the writing is – my head doesn’t seem anywhere near to being close to clear enough; that’s possibly the most frustrating thing about this whole thing (that and the pain and the lack of mobility). Sigh. Grumble. *makes throaty frustrated, just want to be better, noises. And I am SO sorry to hear that about your brother. Seriously, he has all my sympathies and I wish him a swift and speedy recovery. At least the docs are onto it.Nik X

  7. I didn’t know you’d been so poorly till I just read your blog. Thank goodness those antbiotics did their stuff! Hope you’re out and about with your walking boots and binoculars before too long.Kate X

  8. I am so sorry to hear you have been so ill, Nik! I had no idea. I was very poorly myself with the most horrendous bout of neuralgia a couple of weeks back and my writing has all but drawn to a halt. In fact I am only just starting to get back to it – and that includes catching up with my favourite blogs. Hope you continue to make a good recovery and feel up to picking u a pen again, soon.Lots of love and hugs.Beanie

  9. Hey girls! Thanks for dropping by and, especially, for your kind words.I’m so much better than I was (as evidence of this I survived a trek around John Lewis today – sans crutches). I finished the antibiotics today as well so, well, we’ll see. Very much looking forward to being to being me again (binoculars and walking boots included).Sorry to hear you’ve been unwell, Jills. Really hope you’re on the mend. Those stories won’t write themselves!Nik xx
